ABSTRACT

In the movie, the relationship between Baymax and Hiro is portrayed as central to healing Hiro's mental health. Both fictional examples address tension related to how robots which are digital technologies with a physical form can help humans achieve better health, and how health is affected by which technologies an individual can access. More than 20 years later, the reasons that people use social media to discuss mental health are largely the same: community, acceptance, and knowledge. The example is also interesting because health technology is often top-down, as it is with both e-health and welfare technology, while support groups for mental health are bottom-up; that is, the users have defined what the technology means and how it should be used. Social media is not aimed at health per se but is instead designed to foster social bonds and exchange knowledge, and as such, it indirectly suggests that good health relates to knowledge and a sense of belonging.
