ABSTRACT

To understand what happens in a digitalization process, the readers must be able to answer four questions: How is the digitalization process justified? What is being digitized? What stays the same, and What is changed? Answering these questions requires a nuanced understanding of the interactions between a technology, its users, and society. To explore technologies’ interpretative flexibility is to welcome and seek out different interpretations of what a technology is, has been, and should be. Delegation characterizes all interactions between humans and technologies. Using delegation as an analytical tool in the study of digitalization is useful for understanding which changes digitalization actually causes, beyond what is conjured up in visions. Digital technology is often dependent on other technologies and technological systems, and how these relate is important to understand.
