ABSTRACT

The abdominal wall comprises muscles and fascial layers that enclose the abdominal cavity. These muscles serve to maintain the correct anatomical position of intra-abdominal viscera, protect internal organs from injury, assist in coughing/vomiting by increasing intra-abdominal pressure, assist in expiration by pushing organs towards the diaphragm and stabilise the vertebral column as well the trunk in rotation, bending and walking.
