ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 serves as a quick warm-up to prepare readers for more advanced spatial analysis and computational methods in later chapters. The chapter begins with a quick tour of spatial and attribute data management and then surveys basic spatial analysis tools, including spatial queries, spatial joins, and map overlays in ArcGIS Pro. A case study is used to illustrate the typical process of GIS mapping based on the census data and TIGER files in the USA. It offers readers a step-by-step guide for using some of the basic spatial analysis tools to analyze the urban concentric population density decay pattern in ArcGIS Pro. In addition, Appendix 1 demonstrates how to use GIS-based spatial analysis tools to identify spatial relationships, such as polygon adjacency.
