ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I explore what these observations mean for Wise Policy and healthcare systems. Earlier chapters have repeatedly recognised the impact of health systems – the strategic design and cultural underpinnings of our healthcare systems – in shaping, enabling and blocking this work. I start by critiquing the management principles behind our current models of healthcare (New Public Management) and its limitations for whole person care. My three case studies – CATALYST, TAILOR and United Generalism – then explore the system-level changes and elements needed to deliver advanced generalist care in context. These include the need to design into everyday healthcare the cognitive Learning Spaces for knowledge-work-in-context; and re-defining the teams working within those spaces.
