ABSTRACT

Backup power for a grid-tied building is a battery bank. Building load service panels need to be set up properly for essential loads run by the RE and battery bank. Backup power for off-grid systems is a generator that burns fuel. Most of the fuel types are fossil fuels, biodiesel being the exception. Generators need to be located outside the building because of noise, vibrations, heat, and combustion gasses. Generators must be of a large enough capacity to be able to provide power to the building and charge the battery bank quickly. Generators provide alternating current (AC) power, so only a portion of the sine wave will be at a high enough voltage to charge the batteries. The generator needs to be large enough that it will work properly when subjected to inrush current from larger draw motors and compressors, such as a refrigerator. Generators need to be located in an enclosure box or shed. Care needs to be taken that combustion exhaust is away from any fresh air intake for the building.
