ABSTRACT

In this chapter, our utility uses two estimation approaches in an effort to determine how many new MW of PV and battery storage will need to be added to allow the utility to serve 100% of its GWh energy load by a target year. The projected total MW of these new resources is then compared to (i) the total MW of conventional generation that currently exists on our hypothetical utility system, and (ii) the total MW of new resources that would need to be added simply to maintain our utility's reserve margin criterion absent a carbon goal. Our utility will see that the projected total MW of new resources needed to serve 100% of its GWh load by the target year is both (i) a significant multiple of its existing generation and (ii) more than an order of magnitude greater than the MW of new resources needed solely to meet its reserve margin criterion.
