ABSTRACT

In a way, the term Design for X (abbreviated as DfX) stands for a concurrent and cross functional mindset, where the design team has recognized that product design is greater than the sum of its elements. “X” may stand for manufacturing, assembly, service, and reliability; and at times, other concerns such as cost, environment, or international markets. In this chapter, elements of manufacturability and assembly along with serviceability and reliability is review to a) identify the most appropriate materials and processes to deliver design specifications; b) identify which components/assemblies have a shorter life span than others; and c) for electromechanical systems, arrange and locate these components within subsystems such that they can be replaced easily and quickly. Additionally, with the prevalence of consumable and disposable products integrated along with electromechanical systems, unique aspects such as stability and shelf-life is discussed.
