ABSTRACT

In a systems approach to product development, this systematic approach to change is a called configuration management (CM). ANSI/EIA-649 defines CM as a “process for establishing and maintaining consistency of a product’s performance, functional and physical attributes with its requirements, design and operational information throughout its life.” It requires disciplined document maintenance and control from the start of product development. The benefit of CM is that at any point in time, a snapshot of the product’s configuration is available. Any product-related document is considered to be a CM artifact. Although changes are expected to happen, they are instituted with a proper review for the impact of the change on the design, manufacturing, service, compliance, supply chain, etc. This chapter provides an overview of configuration management.
