ABSTRACT

The first steps in the product development roadmap begin with the product requirements document as well as the systems requirements. The goal of this chapter is to provide a high-level review of requirements and requirements management documents. Associated with these artifacts, there are architecture and design documents. I will define these and provide a definition of their role and place in designing a product.

Requirements are considered to be one of the seven key elements of systems engineering; the others being (system engineering) management plan, master schedule, detailed schedule, work breakdown structure, technical performance measurement, and technical reviews and audits. This sounds impressive but what does a system mean? And how does systems engineering differ from other functional disciplines such as chemical, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering?

Additionally and in the context of developing voice of customer, the concept of personas in an Agile methodology is discussed.
