ABSTRACT

In a theoretical sense, the relationship between inputs into a system and its outputs may be expressed as a mathematical function called transfer or characteristics function. Hence, with this function at hand, one could predict variabilities in a systems behavior based on variations in its input. Creating this function in practice is possible but may be tedious. The tool for this purpose is design of experiments (DoE) or in rare cases design of simulations where experiments are done using numerical simulations. At the design stage, transfer functions can be used to conduct tolerance or sensitivity analysis. In this chapter, the need for transfer functions is rationalized and a case study whereby this function is developed used a design of experiments.
