ABSTRACT

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is an innovation in the packet-switching technology, used in the telecommunication networking. MPLS is a technology that has played an important role in making the telecommunication services cheap and of wide usage. Like other technological innovations, this too has a history and a beautiful journey of its implementation to getting popular in the telecommunication industry. At the same time, MPLS had redefined the service provider’s networking and presented a cost-optimized network architecture at the core with a shared traffic approach. MPLS can be thought of as an innovation in the packet-forwarding technology and is a switching technology that regulates data traffic and packet forwarding in a complex network. It has introduced a concept of labels as a differentiator for the data routing technique in a telecommunication network, directing data from one network node to the other based on short path labels rather than long network addresses. The label-based approach gives an edge in the packet-forwarding technique in telecommunication networks compared to the traditional preceding approaches in many ways and avoids complex lookups in a routing table and speeding traffic flows.
