ABSTRACT

Transoesophageal echo is performed using an echo probe positioned within the patient's oesophagus, which allows for superior image quality compared to most transthoracic echo studies. This chapter reviews the indications (and contraindications) for transoesophageal echo and describes the key features of transoesophageal echo probes. The chapter also discusses how to prepare a patient for a transoesophageal echo examination and describes how a typical study is performed with reference to the standard transoesophageal echo views.
