ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the echo assessment of the tricuspid valve. The causes and clinical features of tricuspid stenosis and regurgitation are described, and approaches to echo assessment are discussed. The grading of tricuspid stenosis severity is described with reference to mean pressure gradient, pressure half-time and valve area by continuity equation. The mechanism of tricuspid regurgitation is described in relation to primary and secondary causes. The grading of tricuspid regurgitation severity is described with reference to multiple indicators, including leaflet morphology, right atrial size, right ventricular size, flow convergence, vena contracta width, jet density, jet area, tricuspid valve inflow, hepatic vein flow, regurgitant volume, regurgitant orifice area and proximal isovelocity surface area.
