ABSTRACT
The national echocardiography societies have published guidance on appropriate indications for transthoracic echo and these are discussed in this chapter, together with guidance on the triage of emergency, urgent and inpatient/outpatient referrals. The chapter also describes the standard transthoracic echo windows (left parasternal, right parasternal, apical, subcostal and suprasternal) and associated views, and discusses what needs to be assessed in each view. The chapter concludes with guidance on how to structure an echo report.
