ABSTRACT

The chapter refers to the use of anthropometric data to design the environment to meet children needs. The author draws an attention to the influence of such environment to young and not completely developed organisms. She highlights the negative results of wrongly designed products on their future health. Furthermore, in this chapter the characteristics of the somatic development of children and juveniles are provided. The need of making designers aware of the children physical development and general biological phenomena (the secular trend phenomenon, the acceleration process and the pubertal spurt of body growth) is widely presented. Finally, the application of the anthropometry to the design of school furniture is shown.
