ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a set of methods for what is usually referred to as reliability or lifetime data analysis. The nonparametric techniques are straightforward to use since they are distribution-free. However, these methods' restrictions are that their results cannot accurately be extrapolated beyond the last failure. Reliability prediction methods have a long and distinguished history of application inside and outside the telecommunications business. The British Handbook of Reliability Data for Electronic Components used in Telecommunication Systems provides definitions, and failure rates and outlines a methodology for assessing system reliability from electro-electronic and electromechanical component failure information. Information Technology Intelligence Consulting Corporation has provided reliability data of mainstream server manufacturers, operating systems, and virtualization platforms. Backblaze is a cloud storage and data backup company. Backblaze has been providing yearly reliability data of its storage systems and devices. The data set is said to be Right-Censored when observation of a lifetime may be terminated before the item fails.
