ABSTRACT

Pin or blood feathers are normal new developing feathers with good blood supply. The bleeding end of the feather can be pinched firmly for several minutes. This can be done using fingers or pliers. A small amount of styptic powder, iron chloride or a silver nitrate stick can be used to stimulate blood clotting. Ligation of the pin feather should be attempted, and the feather allowed to molt out normally, if possible, to avoid trauma to the follicle and potential future complications in feather growth. Ligation should be performed proximal to any breaks or weak points in the feather shaft, and the feather trimmed distal to the ligation. If minor bleeding occurs from the feather follicle, this can be stopped by applying gentle pressure. Cauterization or the use of chemicals such as iron chloride or silver nitrate to stimulate blood clotting can cause permanent damage to the follicle and lead to complications.
