ABSTRACT

Perforating beak trauma is usually the result of a bite from another psittacine bird. Aseptic gloves should be worn when dealing with open wounds. A fresh bite wound on the beak may be rinsed with sterile saline solution, cooled boiled water or tap water if necessary. There is a high risk of bacterial infection of damaged bone tissue. Deep trauma to the beak causes severe pain, and because of that, treatment with analgesic drugs (e.g., meloxicam and butorphanol or tramadol) for adequate pain relief must be started immediately. In case of significant blood loss (more than 1% of body weight), fluid therapy is indicated due to the risk of hypovolemia. Due to the high risk of infection, treatment with a broad-spectrum antibiotic (e.g., amoxicillin/clavulanic acid) should be started immediately. In the case of bacteriological culturing and susceptibility testing, treatment with antibiotics is started pending culture results.
