ABSTRACT

Crop stasis is caused by obstruction or motility disorders of the crop, and is noted when the crop fails to empty and becomes distended. Because of this disorder, food remains in the crop for too long, and secondary overgrowth of bacteria or yeasts is common (sour crop). In cases of hard crop contents in bigger species like chickens, administering some lukewarm tap water orally followed by a gentle massage of the crop can help to soften the crop contents, facilitating passage to the proventriculus. Dehydration can be the cause as well as a complication of crop stasis. To break this vicious cycle and to stabilize birds with crop stasis, fluid therapy is essential. Like dehydration, hypothermia can be the cause as well as a complication of crop stasis. To break this vicious cycle and to stabilize birds with crop stasis, a warm environment is essential.
