ABSTRACT

Paralysis is the loss of muscle function in a part of the body. Paralysis is caused by problems of the nervous system, for example trauma of the spinal cord or peripheral nerves, stroke, intoxication, neoplasms of the nervous system or pressure on nerves by eggs or neoplasms/tumors in the coelom/abdomen. X-ray examination or computed tomography (CT-scan) is indicated in cases of paralysis to check for fractures and luxations, metal particles in the gastrointestinal tract, calcified eggs or space-occupying lesions (e.g., tumor) in the coelom. Provide general stabilization by means of nutrition, fluids, heat and oxygen, if necessary. Additional analgesics like opioids (e.g., butorphanol, tramadol) and/or gabapentin are indicated in cases of severe (neurological) pain.
