ABSTRACT

Eyelids can be closed due to pain, swelling or exudate. Closed eyes must be opened for examination of the eye and for prevention of further damage to the cornea in case of infections or foreign bodies. Anesthesia is frequently necessary or useful in cases of painful disorders of the eyes. In case the eyelids are stuck, drops of saline solution can be applied to soften dried exudate. Next, the eyelids can be gently opened using wet cotton tip applicators without putting any pressure on the cornea. In cases of bacterial conjunctivitis and keratitis, topically and/or systemically administered antibiotics are indicated. In cases of sinusitis or uveitis, systemically administered antibiotics are indicated.
