ABSTRACT

Avian droppings normally consist of feces, uric acid crystals (urates) and watery urine. The color and consistency of the feces can vary with the diet. Owners should offer favorite food items and try to stimulate/encourage the bird to eat. Intake of energy is most important, and initially for a short term, the exact nutrient composition of the food is of minor importance as long as the food items being offered are not harmful. Antibiotic treatment can be considered as long as no other non-bacterial cause has been determined. It can be curative in case of bacterial infections and prevent secondary bacterial overgrowth in case of other causes of black feces. Treatment with antibiotics is indicated in cases of bacterial infections or psittacosis and could be considered in birds with yellow or green urates from unknown causes.
