ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the decisions and solutions for automation in container terminals. It focuses on the scheduling problem of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) in container terminals. In recent years, automation of solutions for decision-making at container terminals has become more necessary and has attracted more attention. The complexity of the proposed problem was investigated and then the problem was formulated as a linear integer-programming model. A solution based on a combination of the greedy algorithm and the genetic algorithm was proposed. The parameters of the proposed method were investigated using Minitab software and Taguchi method to determine the appropriate values. In an automated container terminal, the traffic problems are critical. An AGV malfunction or breakdowns lead to an interruption in container handling. Collision occurs when more than one AGV attempt to occupy the same segment of the path at the same time.
