ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses solution methods to the decisions. There are three main challenges associated with providing practical software for the decision-making: simulating a container terminal, selecting a design architecture, and choosing appropriate solution methods. The chapter addresses the first and second challenges and then classified the scheduling techniques. To address the third challenge, the authors do a survey on the solution methods to scheduling problems, in general. The chapter suggests two approaches for simulating container terminals and propose several frameworks for implementation. The simulation used future demand scenarios to design the characteristics of the terminals in terms of configuration, equipment, and operations. In order to ameliorate the productivity in a confined space of container terminals, it is important to optimize the assignment of the existing distributed resources, such as the cranes, storage, vehicles, and routs inside terminals.
