ABSTRACT

The length of this chapter demonstrates the scope of digital technology application. Many of the major application areas since 1995 are covered in this chapter. The broader issues are teased out alerting the reader to the need for ethical caution when creating and implementing application systems. There are 31 separate accounts included in the chapter. The incredible evolution of digital technology is evident because these accounts are laid out chronologically. As digital technology becomes more pervasive, so the range of applications becomes wider. In part this is driven by online social media which has expanded development contribution, user access and global coverage. It is, therefore, unsurprising that there are eight sections which have online social media as the primary focus; the first being published in 1998 and the last in 2018. It also follows that privacy of individuals was, and remains, a central ethical issue for digital technology while seven sections have this as the primary focus many others also include privacy as a secondary issue.
