ABSTRACT

Construction features and design aspects of various machines utilised in seed preparation are discussed in this chapter. Discussion on machinery options available for different unit operations will help project engineers select appropriate machinery for their specific requirements. Discussion on control and safety systems should be of help to plant engineers and operators. Machinery drives have been touched upon.

Apart from the machinery used for the preparation of major oilseeds, rapeseed and sunflower seed, namely seed cracker, conditioner, flaker, cooker and dehullers, those utilised for other oilseeds, namely seed breakers (hammer mills) and extruders/expanders are also covered. Cottonseed delinting and dehulling machinery is also described. Machineries used for seed unloading and storage, including conveyors, storage silos and seed dryers are covered in some detail. Seed cleaning and weighing machinery, used prior to preparation proper, is also covered. Layout of preparation machinery in an oil mill is discussed, with the pros and cons of alternative arrangements.
