ABSTRACT

Once aspiring community managers feel they fulfilled the theoretical prerequisites or obtained practical experience and are ready to apply for a community management position, starting the job search can feel overwhelming. In this chapter, the author takes on the role of a mentor and walks readers through tips about entering the job market. The chapter presents ways for finding job listings and connect to other people for discovering opportunities. Because many people have a negative image of networking, the author explains ways to network that are accessible for introverts, people with little financial resources, and people with disabilities. Moreover, readers are presented with a dedicated segment about how to decipher job postings, to empower them to look past the exact words and skills asked for and make their life experience applicable. This section draws from real-world examples of relevant community management job postings of game companies. If job listings do not include a salary range, newcomers can find it hard to know what to expect and run the risk of underselling themselves. Therefore, the author presents an introduction of how applicants should approach this topic.
