ABSTRACT

The moment of relief. The application was successful. The interview (hopefully) showed that there was an initial fit between the employer's and future employee's attitudes and goals, and the salary and benefit negotiation worked out well. Then the scary realisation sinks in that now the job has to be done. Depending on the kind of game studio and location, this can entail different hurdles. Among these can be relocation to a new country or city, working in a language other than one's native language, or just finding a footing in a company with several hundreds or thousands of other people with their own goals and professional language. There is no one-size-fits-all recommendation to help in all situations, but the author will provide some general pointers to help new industry joiners settle in. The chapter presents selected strategies and tools to get started and tips for finding a spot in the team or, in the case of the solo communication employee in smaller teams, carve out their space in the studio.
