ABSTRACT

A good leader is someone who embraces and facilitates change from a human systems perspective. The human side of industrial engineering is what sets the discipline apart from other engineering disciplines. In this regard, from a systems perspective, soft skills form the bastion of the practice of industrial engineering. Hard skills form the quantitative basis for leading and managing the workforce. Using a systems framework, industrial engineers enmesh qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques to manage integrated systems of people, tools, and process. The premise of this chapter is to combine the systems viewpoint and the human cognitive reasoning to improve functional efficiency and productivity in the work environment. A key systems tool discussed in the chapter is the DEJI Systems Model®, which provides a structural pathway for human-based work design, work evaluation, work justification, and work integration.
