ABSTRACT

Popular scientific descriptions often emphasize concepts and phenomena that are difficult or “impossible” to understand and sometimes make them sound more mysterious than necessary. Just like electrons and photons, large objects like humans, cars, and tennis balls, also have a double nature in principle. Entanglement may seem to imply instant transfer of information, faster than light and with no cost of energy. Chinese scientists used a satellite in 2017 to link two ground stations and showed that two photons could maintain their quantum mechanical entanglement over a distance of 1200 kilometers. The fact that a quantum mechanical system does not “show its colors” until we observe it has had philosophical consequences. The system’s quantum bits may quickly get entangled with the environment and the quantum processor’s initially unique properties will not be distinguishable from the environment. T.
