ABSTRACT

Gecko lizards are a common sight in tropical lands, where they sit quietly around the ceiling lamps, stalking the bugs of the night. Geckos constitute a large family with more than one thousand species. The secret of the gecko seems to be based on quantum physics. There are fossils of gecko lizards stuck in amber with feet similar to those of today’s lizards, one hundred million years old. Evolution thus made early use of quantum physics for animal species to assert themselves and survive. The geckos use the opportunities of tunneling to create their living space where other insect eaters find it difficult to compete. There are various varieties of adhesive tape that use gecko-inspired models and methods for attaching to surfaces, for instance by using the microscopic structures called carbon nanotubes, and the development goes on.
