ABSTRACT

Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution in the book On the Origin of Species in 1859. Darwin made his discovery without knowing much about cells, inheritance, genes, and even less about mutations, DNA, and the genetic code, discovered almost 100 years later. Life’s diversity is almost endless. It is easy to forget the wonder of it all when we watch a gecko climb up walls to hunt for mosquitoes, or when we look skywards to follow the flight of a crow. Darwin’s story begins with the first cell, the common ancestor. He proposes that life on Earth originates from one common ancestral species. The cell membrane can then “yield” and form a vesicle that encapsulates the molecule and transports it to the appropriate recipient.
