ABSTRACT

This chapter provides models to predict the nonlinear response of piles in sliding soils for different scenarios. The pile may exhibit rigid behaviour in both the sliding and stable layers (2-layer model), rigid in sliding layer and elastic in stable layer (R-E model), and rigid in sliding layer and elastic-plastic in stable layer (R-EP model). The models capture impact of rotational restraints (at pile-cap, sliding depth or pile-tip), mirrored behaviour of deep sliding, plasticity, and ductility of the pile on pile response including bending moment-to-thrust ratio. The R-E and R-EP models also provide expressions for estimating rotational stiffness. These models use a common set of parameters (LFPUL modulus k s and stiffness k θ ) and can accurately predict the response of both rigid piles and bi-portion piles in moving slopes.
