ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the terminology and main mechanisms of rock scour, as well as the main engineering disciplines where rock scour is an issue, i.e. dam engineering, river engineering and coastal engineering, together with some examples. Second, it provides a summary of the current state of digitization, digitalization and digital transformation of rock scour as a stand-alone scientific and engineering discipline. Strongly relying on digital efforts in the fields of dam and rock engineering, the digital evolution of rock scour engineering is currently only in its infancy. Digital transformation asks for the development of digital platforms and digital twins of the phenomenon and of related engineering infrastructure. The current shortcomings are briefly outlined, together with an outlook of ongoing and future developments.
