ABSTRACT

The refrigeration plants on merchant vessels are essential for ships involved in transporting refrigerated cargo and of course for keeping perishable provisions for the crew. On reefer ships, the temperature of perishable or temperature-sensitive cargo such as food, chemicals, and liquefied gases is controlled by the refrigeration plant. The main purpose of the ship’s refrigeration plant is to prevent the growth of micro-organisms, oxidation, fermentation and the drying out of cargo. In this chapter, we will discuss the role and function of the marine refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.
