ABSTRACT

To be effective, a director needs to understand the corporate entity being governed, contribute experience, knowledge, or other abilities to board deliberations, and be interpersonally skilful. These attributes of effective directorship are each considered. Director development, training, and updating are discussed, including in-house director-training programmes, board briefings, strategy seminars, mentoring, and continuous self-development. Director and officer insurance is mentioned. Regular assessment of individual director’s performance is important and approaches to such assessment are reviewed.
