ABSTRACT

A comprehensive, person-centered nutrition assessment allows the dietitian to target the nutrition intervention. While treatment guidelines and research may explain the pathophysiology of the patient’s condition, the individual’s complete medical history, lifestyle, knowledge, preferences, and barriers provide the best available evidence in identifying the patient’s needs. The dietitian’s expertise in nutrition, education, and lifestyle counseling come together to develop an individualized treatment plan that will be attainable, acceptable, and ultimately effective for improving the patient’s outcomes.
