ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces several new datasets and additional examples of integrating vector and raster data. It provides annual data on locations where specific crop types such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and many others are planted. The chapter uses downloaded data files characterizing crop types, hydrological unit boundaries, and stream data from the Middle Big Sioux Subbasin in eastern South Dakota. Analysing changes in the relative abundance of crop types and other land cover classes is important for understanding how agricultural land use is changing over time. Some of the labels are crowded and difficult to read. The label positions can also be modified using an alternative geom function. Two new raster datasets are created by masking the Cropland Data Layer dataset with the riparian and upland vector datasets.
