ABSTRACT

Cutting fluids have been used to improve the machining performance from the early days of manufacturing. Cutting fluids have been used to reduce the cost of machining while also increasing the quality of the machined parts. There were a number of developments in the cutting fluid formulations to tailor make them for the different processes that were developed over time. This chapter highlights some of the problems with the cutting tools that need attention. In addition, the need for sustainability has become an important issue in order to move toward renewable sources for the base oils for cutting fluids. This chapter discusses all the developments with a historic perspective.
