ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the issue of failed experiments. Failure is more common than success, so it is important to deal with it correctly and use a systematic approach to discover the nature of the problem. Quality management systems offer techniques such as root cause analysis and failure modes and effects analysis to work through experimental design failures. Experiments that do not turn out as expected should still be considered for publication for the benefit of the scientific community as a whole.
