2This lab introduces the student to the veterinary laboratory which is responsible for diagnostic testing as it relates to veterinary clinical pathology. Clinical laboratories may be individualized to fit the needs of the veterinary clinician and their expected clientele. Whether the needs include basic diagnostics for a rural large animal clinic, a cosmopolitan small animal practice or even a private state or federally run laboratory, many are the same.

This lab addresses the following Veterinary Technician Student Essential and Recommended Skills List as set forth by the AVMA-CVTEA in Appendix I, Section 6 – Laboratory Procedures. The Essential Decision-making Abilities to include:

Properly prepare, handle and submit appropriate samples for diagnostic analysis in order to ensure maximum accuracy of results.

Selection and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Implementation of quality control measures (group activity).
