ABSTRACT

166This lab covers the “art” of fine needle aspiration. This procedure may be performed on peripheral lymph nodes, organs such as the liver, masses or other suspicious areas. The purpose is to sample the mass for a collection of cells from within the lesion or suspicious tissue in order for the clinician to diagnose and subsequently treat the animal appropriately.

This lab addresses the following Veterinary Technology Student Essential and Recommended Skills List as set forth by the AVMA-CVTEA in Appendix I, Section 6 – Laboratory Procedures Specimen Analysis to include:

Perform cytological evaluation

✓ Perform fine needle aspirate and impression smear preparation (differentiate benign from malignant)
