38This lab introduces the student to the manner in which blood smears should be handled and some of the abnormalities that can occur as a result of mishandling of blood during the collection, creation and staining of smears. Although veterinary technicians do not (and should never) offer a diagnosis as a result of examining a blood smear, they should be knowledgeable about the normal and abnormal features that may be encountered in a blood smear and the possible reasons for these occurrences.

This lab addresses the following Veterinary Technician Student Essential and Recommended Skills List as set forth by the AVMA-CVTEA in Appendix I, Section 6:

Evaluate erythrocyte morphology – normal vs. abnormal

Perform leukocyte differential – normal vs. abnormal
