ABSTRACT

70This lab covers several manual hematological evaluations which are routinely performed as point of care (POC) testing in veterinary patients. Although the majority if not all of these tests may be performed mechanically as part of the automatic hematology “profile”, it is important for students to be familiar with, if not proficient, performing these tests manually for two major reasons: a) the knowledge gained concerning how a test “works” allows students to understand the mechanics encountered when using hematology analyzers and b) developing a practiced diagnostic skill that may be useful when hematology analyzers are not available remains useful to the practitioner in all situations.
