ABSTRACT

78This lab introduces the student to the scientific principles and performance of coagulation testing in animal species. There are several factors which influence the proper coagulation of clotting as it occurs in the face of vascular clotting. Likewise, there are many different ways to ascertain whether or not clotting mechanisms are functioning properly. Some of the tests are fairly simple to complete and may even be considered point-of-care (POC) testing while others may be more complex in nature and require specialized machinery or supplies. This lab will expose students to testing methodologies which they may expect to encounter within a clinical setting.

This lab addresses the following Veterinary Technology Student Essential and Recommended Skills List as set forth by the AVMA-CVTEA in Appendix I, Section 6 – Specimen Analysis Tasks to include:

Coagulation Tests (one of the following must be performed)

Buccal Mucosal Bleeding Time (BMBT)

Activated Clotting Time (ACT)

Prothrombin time

Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT)

Fibrinogen assay
