ABSTRACT

An inverter is needed in the electric vehicle-on-wheels power train configuration. Not only is the inverter included in the power train of electric vehicles-on-wheels but it also is a principal component. The inverter is needed to convert DC energy from a battery (remember batteries produce DC voltage and current) to AC power to drive the motor. An inverter also acts as a motor controller and as a filter to isolate the battery from potential damage from stray currents. In addition, because batteries produce DC voltage and current and most consumer products work on AC, including some electric vehicles-on-wheels, a vehicle power invertor is necessary to use the AC devices on the road.
