ABSTRACT

The most important functions of the female reproductive system are the production of female gametes, the oocytes, their fertilisation, and the housing of the fetus during pregnancy. To achieve these functions, it also plays an important endocrine function by producing the female sex hormones. In addition to the histological structures of the ovary, uterine tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, vestibule, external genitalia, and associated glands, the microscopic structures of the different types of placentas that occur in domestic species are described. Finally, the differences with the female reproductive systems of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, in some cases quite evident, are highlighted.
