ABSTRACT

The nervous system is subdivided into the central nervous system (CNS), which comprises the brain (brainstem, cerebellum, and cerebrum) and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which covers all other nervous tissue and acts to interconnect all the tissues of the body with the CNS (nerves and ganglia). The chapter describes the basic cellular unit of the nervous system, the neuron, and supportive cells, the neuroglia, as well as the histological structure of all the components of the CNS and PNS.
