ABSTRACT

The sense organs perform functions of vital importance in animals such as vision (eye), hearing, and balance (ear). Within these organs, we find a series of neuroepithelium specialised in receiving stimuli that will later be transmitted to the central nervous system. In addition to the differences between the eyes and ears of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish with mammals, the chapter includes sensory organs of special relevance in these species. The organs of smell, touch, and sense together with other smaller specialised, and in many cases, species-specific organs, are also described in this chapter.
